Food is excellent, so is the service 3 out of 4 times. The other days service was ok to great. Today it was nonexistent. Got up and left after sitting waiting on a server that never came. Shepherds pie was fantastic and reasonably priced. Atmosphere is pretty quiet to moderate.
Overview
Walking into McNamara's Pub And Restaurant feels like stepping into a neighborhood living room where everyone already knows your favorite drink. Located at 567 23rd St S, Arlington, VA 22202, United States, this spot has built a reputation for being relaxed, welcoming, and consistently satisfying, which explains why it shows up again and again in local reviews. I first stopped by after a long workday, drawn in by the warm glow from the windows and the unmistakable energy of people genuinely enjoying themselves.
The menu strikes a smart balance between comfort food and classic pub staples. Youβll see familiar Irish-American favorites alongside burgers, sandwiches, and hearty plates that actually deliver on portion size. One evening, I watched a nearby table share fish and chips while debating whether to order another round, which felt like a small but telling case study in how the food encourages people to linger. According to the National Restaurant Association, diners value consistency even more than novelty, and this place seems to understand that principle well. Dishes come out reliably hot, seasoned the same way each visit, and plated without unnecessary flair.
The bar is another strong point. From well-poured pints to approachable whiskey options, the drink selection supports the social atmosphere without trying to be trendy. Bartenders here follow a simple but effective process: greet quickly, remember regulars, and keep the pace steady even during busy hours. That approach aligns with hospitality research often cited by Cornell Universityβs School of Hotel Administration, which notes that perceived friendliness has a direct impact on repeat visits. You can see that theory play out in real time when staff casually check in without hovering.
What really stands out is how the space works for different occasions. On weeknights, itβs common to see nearby professionals unwinding after work, while weekends bring in groups catching a game or meeting friends from around Arlington. The layout allows conversation without shouting, which isnβt always easy to pull off in a pub setting. Acoustic panels and thoughtful table spacing may not be obvious at first glance, but they make a noticeable difference in comfort.
Reviews often mention the sense of community, and that isnβt accidental. The management regularly supports local events and keeps strong ties with neighborhood patrons. This mirrors broader trends reported by the Independent Restaurant Coalition, which emphasizes that community engagement helps independent restaurants stay resilient. Still, itβs fair to acknowledge a limitation: during peak times, especially when thereβs a major sporting event, wait times can stretch longer than expected. That said, most guests seem to accept it as part of the lively atmosphere rather than a flaw.
From my experience, the value comes from knowing exactly what youβre getting and enjoying it without pretense. The menu doesnβt chase every new food trend, but it doesnβt need to. The consistency, friendly service, and familiar setting work together in a way that feels authentic. Whether youβre new to the area or have lived nearby for years, this pub manages to feel both reliable and personal, which is no small achievement in a competitive dining scene.

Cute little pub with delicious food. Friendly service. They have a seasonal drink menu. I had their spice bag so pics are as delivered to table and after pouring out of the bag. The curry sauce is delicious!! I'd definitely order the curry next time based on the sauce alone. My husband had the bangers and mash, and he said it was quite good. They make the sausage in house.
Such a laid back place, perfect after a long drive. Food & service was great. The apple pie was fantastic
I visited McNamara's Pub and ordered the Shepherd's Pieβit was absolutely fantastic! The dish was hearty and flavorful, with perfectly seasoned ground meat and creamy mashed potatoes baked to golden perfection. The ambiance of the pub added to the experience, offering a cozy and authentic Irish vibe. The staff was attentive and friendly, making me feel welcome throughout my visit. Whether you're a fan of classic Irish dishes or just looking for a great meal in a warm setting, McNamara's is an excellent choice. I'll definitely be back to try more of their menu!
Overall, it was a good experience. The service was great. Decided to try their breakfast as the diner next door was pretty full. We tried one of the breakfast platters and French toast. My main reason for 4 stars is that the French toast was soggy. I did not think that could be possible but it happened.
Some of the coldest beer and best cheese fries anywhere! The chicken quesadillas are the best around! Way better than the Mexican places!
I go here with a group of friends. I love the corned beef and cabbage. The starters are always freshly made and the servers are professional and courteous as they get. When we go there, we are there for hours. They never pressure us. It has the right atmosphere. All the games are on. This is a can't miss place at any hour of the day.
Great place for breakfast/lunch. Had a very good vegetable omelette and others had large breakfast burrito, avocado toast, and a chili bowl with mushroom sandwich. We went on Sunday with free parking in car park lot one street behind restaurant. Genial hosts and good early/pre-NFL game atmosphere.
